Human Library Launches in Israel at Hebrew University Jerusalem
The Human Library is officially coming to Israel, with an inaugural event scheduled for May 19, 2025, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The event, open to the public, invites all interested readers to join in person on campus and engage in powerful conversations aimed at exploring our diversity.
The Human Library is a global initiative that challenges stigma and stereotypes through dialogue. Instead of borrowing traditional books, readers “check out” human beings — volunteers from various walks of life who share their lived experiences and answer questions in a safe, respectful space.
Borrow a book online or on campus
This milestone marks the first official Human Library event in Israel and interested readers are encouraged to show up on campus and borrow one or more of our open books.
All the books are volunteers that have been trained in their role to allow readers to ask questions about their topic. The in person activity comes as a trial is also underway using the Human Library´s online bookshelf and integrate learning exercises into the curriculum of a group students.
Approximately 70 students are currently reading books online as part of trial project.
Need for safe spaces to connect and learn
Ronni Abergel, founder of the Human Library, expressed hope for the project’s impact in Israel:
“More than ever, there is a need in this region for open and honest conversations about the ways in which we are different. So that we can better understand each others experiences and find more common ground.”
The Human Library event on May 19 will feature a wide range of human “Books” representing diverse identities, religioius beliefs, life experiences, and perspectives, from individuals who have faced discrimination or social exclusion to those living with disabilities, working in stigmatized professions or who are neurodivergent.
With growing interest from educators, students, and community leaders, the Human Library is hoping to become a key platform for social dialogue and empathy-building in Israel.
“We are proud to be taking this first important step in partnership with the Hebrew University Jerusalem and celebrating their 100th year and our 25th Anniversary by creating impactful learning opportunities together for the benefit of students, faculty and the greater community”
The Human Library event is free and open to all, and no prior registration is required.
