Kutztown University of Pennsylvania
The Kutztown University Commission on Human Diversity, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, and the Rohrbach Library is pleased to present THE HUMAN LIBRARY. Stop by anytime from 10 am – 4 pm on Tuesday April 2, 2024 in the Rohbach Library. The Human Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
The Human Library or “Menneskebiblioteket” as it is called in Danish, was created in Copenhagen in the spring of 2000 by Ronni Abergel and his brother Dany and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen. The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. We host events where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations, they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf, represent a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc.
Kutztown University hosted their own Human Library in 2017, 2019 and 2023. This year’s library will feature 12 books with topic with a range of topic. The books are volunteers including KU students, staff, and faculty and some members of the community. The event is registered with the international Human Library Organization headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The human Books are members of our communities who have experienced discrimination or prejudice based on who they are, where they come from, or how they self-identify. At the event, Readers and Books have a 20-minute conversation, asking questions and discussing their shared experiences and differing perspectives. The goal of this event is to create a dialogue and understanding between people in our communities in a safe, conversational space and to promote unity, diversity, and respect. The Human Library is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive, non-partisan space. More details at https://lib.hoover.mcdaniel.edu/human-library/overview.

The Human Library® creates a safe space for dialogue where topics are discussed openly between our human books and their readers. All of our human books are volunteers with personal experience with their topic. The Human Library® is a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
⭐ How it works ⭐
Attendees, also known as readers, will be able to borrow human books for 30-minute conversations. All human books come with a title and synopsis to help readers select what they would like to read (ie. with whom they would like to converse). This is an opportunity to speak with people with different lived experiences.
Mutual respect, patience and sensitivity are requirements for participation in this event. If you are interested in participating in this event, please review our Code of Conduct on the Library website.
About our Books: Our human books are volunteers and active members of the Arlington community or wider metro DC area.

ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT DIFFICULT ISSUES
Join us for an event developed by The Human Library, a nonprofit learning platform that allows individuals to borrow people instead of books. But not just any people. Every “human book” from this library represents a group that faces misunderstanding, prejudice or stigmas because of their lifestyle, ethnicity, beliefs, or disability.
We have developed a diverse collection of human books from our community. At the event, a list of our Books will be available in the lobby.
This event is cosponsored by the Fairfax Library Foundation in collaboration with the Human Library, Copenhagen, Denmark.
What could be a better source to learn from than someone who has had a lived experience? Ronni Abergel, CEO Human Library.

Sunday, April 21, 2024
1-4 p.m.
Oakhurst Home, Minnetrista
Minnetrista Boulevard, Muncie
The Human Library® is a safe place for serious conversations about often difficult and perhaps sensitive topics and allows participants to explore and examine their own conscious or unconscious bias. The Oakhurst Home at Minnetrista is a beautiful and historic location for this impactful event.
At a Human Library® our Books are people who are on loan to Readers (YOU!). Books have life experiences that reflect stereotyping and bias in our society and are ready to not just tell a story but to engage in a conversation with you. They expect and appreciate difficult questions that lead to greater understanding. Every Book on our Bookshelf has experienced stereotyping, stigma or challenges and marginalizing due to their lifestyle, profession, diagnosis, belief, disability, or social status, to name a few.
At the Human Library® we invite you to examine and explore the topics on our Bookshelf and perhaps meet your own prejudice or better understand the life of one who experiences stigmas and stereotypes.
Each Book checkout is for a half hour dialogue. Check out 1 or as many Books as you have time for. The last check out is at 3:30 p.m.
Always FREE, this is a terrific learning opportunity and you will thank yourself for making the time to come!

The Human Library
Moorestown Library
In the best sense of the word, the Human Library is a library of people and their experiences with prejudice. However, instead of paperback books, actual people are on loan for conversations. the concept is about acknowledging and challenging the prejudice that we all carry towards one another. For that reason, the Human Library creates a safe space for conversation where topics subject to taboo, marginalization or stigmatization can be openly addressed without condemnation. The people acting as Human Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage or life experiences. At The Human Library, we invite in all questions, and our Books engage in sharing their personal experiences with the readers.
You can come by in this timespan to borrow an open Book for a conversation about prejudices and diversity. The concept is simple; you show up at the library counter where you receive guidance from the librarians on the topics we have available for lending. Once you have chosen which open Book you would like to talk to, you can sit and have an open conversation where every question on the topic is welcome.
We look forward to seeing you and hope you have an interesting afternoon!

The Human Library is a non-profit organization that began with its first event in Denmark in 2000. It has established itself as a global learning platform with an initiative to create safe spaces for dialogue between human Books and their readers. The conversations between Books and readers can not only help challenge prejudices and stereotypes but also contribute more broadly to greater cohesion across social, ethnic, and religious divisions.
During a Human Library event, readers will see a variety of available Book titles and will be able to select one to “borrow” for a 30-minute reading slot. Readers and Books will then have a one-on-one conversation where Books will introduce themselves and readers will then have the opportunity to ask questions.
This is a drop-in event, and participants will be invited to borrow Books on a first-come, first served throughout the event until last call at 3:30pm. This event is appropriate for a teen, adult, or senior audience.

Grand opening Human Library Reading Garden in Copenhagen
Human Library Organization
On the last Sunday in April, we will open our Reading Garden in Copenhagen for a fourth season of courageous conversations. Join us from noon to 4 pm for an opportunity to borrow our open books.
Since 2020 we have invited visitors to join us in our garden located in front of the culture centre UNION at Nørre Alle 7.
It is free to use the Human Library and this season (apr 28 – oct 13) we will be open to the public every Sunday.
If you show up at the library desk, you will receive guidance from our librarians about the subjects that we have available for lending and will be introduced to our rules for lending.
When you have chosen a subject you would like to learn more about, the librarian will collect your book and introduce you to each other, after which you can sit in the Reading Garden and have an open conversation, where all questions about the subject are welcome.
Loans can have a duration of up to 30 minutes, but you are welcome to hand in your book before that. As long as it is in the same condition as before.
Our books and librarians look forward to welcoming you!

Åbent i Menneskebibliotekets Læsehave - Sæsonpremiere
Union KBH
