Human Library at Saskatoon Public Library, Saskatoon, Canada
Visitors to the Saskatoon Public Library are in for a treat on March 24th, 2012, when the doors open to the first Human Library event in Saskatoon, Canada. The event is organized by a partnership that includes the Newcomer Information Centre, The City of Saskatoon, the public library and the Catholic Schools of greater Saskatoon.
The city of Saskatoon is experiencing a significant growth, with an increasing diversity in population. In particular there are many recent newcomers, from all parts of the world. The local organizers want to address prejudices or misconceptions that may exist in the city, in regards to newcomers, as well as any other potentially marginalized or stereotyped groups or individuals.
Among the titles expected to be available to readers are:
- People from other countries, cultures, & religions
- Representatives from the Aboriginal community
- Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered
- Obesity
- Disabled
- Alternate lifestyles
As always the services of the Human Library are free. The event is funded with a grant from the Saskatchewan Provincial Government, specifically, from the Intercultural Awareness Initiatives Fund. The City of Saskatoon and the Saskatoon Public Library are also contributing additional resources.
