Human Library at Morrisville State College Library, Morrisville, New York, USA
To commemorate Martin
Luther King Day, the Morrisville State College Library will host a Human
Library to raise awareness of and to encourage constructive dialogue
about prejudices and stereotypes that lead to discrimination against
individuals or groups. The books presented represent groups or individuals within the community who are subjected to discrimination or stigma and are willing to share their experiences with readers.
The conversations between books and readers provides an opportunity to challenge commonly held perceptions and stereotypes, and bring together members of the campus community who might otherwise avoid interaction, say the organisers of their motivation for the event.
The objective of the Human Library is not to convince, convert, or pressure anyone into accepting something they do not believe in; the goal is to provide a safe environment for readers to interact with individuals they might avoid due to stereotypic preconceptions.
