Lismore´s Human Library
Lismore’s Human Library is the first of its kind in Australia and in a way, in the world. The concept gives people from different walks of life the opportunity to share their experiences with 'readers' who want to know more about the lives of others. The books in the living library are people representing groups frequently confronted with prejudices, stereotypes, or discrimination.
Lismore’s Human Library is now a regular event on the Lismore Public Library calendar. After the concept was launched in Lismore in November 2006, many books and readers expressed their desire to have regular opportunities to borrow and now regular reading sessions at Lismore Regional Library are held on the first Friday of every month, from 11am - 2 pm.
The project is organised by ordinary members of the greater Lismore community who are working towards the creation of a harmonious society.
Lismore´s Human Library aims to:
- Use personal contact and new experiences to reduce and prevent racism and challenge stereotypes.
- Celebrate diversity and foster respect and appreciation of that diversity.
The 'books' in the living library are people representing groups frequently confronted with prejudices and stereotypes, people who are often victims of discrimination or social exclusion. In this library, 'books' cannot only speak, but they are able to reply to the reader's questions, and the 'books' can even ask questions and learn themselves.
With the support of the Lismore City Council and the Lismore City Library the vision is to work together to make Lismore's Human Library a vibrant, long-term and ongoing project.
