Human Library at Kutztown University of PA
Kutztown University of Pennsylvania
The Kutztown University Commission on Human Diversity, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, and the Rohrbach Library is pleased to present THE HUMAN LIBRARY. Stop by anytime from 10 am – 4 pm on Tuesday April 2, 2024 in the Rohbach Library. The Human Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
The Human Library or “Menneskebiblioteket” as it is called in Danish, was created in Copenhagen in the spring of 2000 by Ronni Abergel and his brother Dany and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen. The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. We host events where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations, they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf, represent a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc.
Kutztown University hosted their own Human Library in 2017, 2019 and 2023. This year’s library will feature 12 books with topic with a range of topic. The books are volunteers including KU students, staff, and faculty and some members of the community. The event is registered with the international Human Library Organization headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.

A Human Library is a safe space where human Books share their stories with Readers who attend the event. The human Books are members of our communities who have experienced discrimination or prejudice based on who they are, where they come from, or how they self-identify. At the event, Readers and Books have a 20-minute conversation, asking questions and discussing their shared experiences and differing perspectives. The goal of this event is to create a dialogue and understanding between people in our communities in a safe, conversational space and to promote unity, diversity, and respect. The Human Library is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive, non-partisan space. More details at https://lib.hoover.mcdaniel.edu/human-library/overview.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Cassandra Casey (CCasey@carrollcc.edu or 410-386-8118).
This event is a collaboration among Human Library, Carroll County Community College, McDaniel College’s Hoover Library, and Carroll County Public Library.

Menneskebiblioteket for ansatte fra Albertslund Bibliotek
Albertslund Bibliotek
Her er alle læsere velkomne.

The Human Library
Moorestown Library
In the best sense of the word, the Human Library is a library of people and their experiences with prejudice. However, instead of paperback books, actual people are on loan for conversations. the concept is about acknowledging and challenging the prejudice that we all carry towards one another. For that reason, the Human Library creates a safe space for conversation where topics subject to taboo, marginalization or stigmatization can be openly addressed without condemnation. The people acting as Human Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage or life experiences. At The Human Library, we invite in all questions, and our Books engage in sharing their personal experiences with the readers.
You can come by in this timespan to borrow an open Book for a conversation about prejudices and diversity. The concept is simple; you show up at the library counter where you receive guidance from the librarians on the topics we have available for lending. Once you have chosen which open Book you would like to talk to, you can sit and have an open conversation where every question on the topic is welcome.
We look forward to seeing you and hope you have an interesting afternoon!
