One of the first major institutions to launch a Human Library program in Canada, Calgary Public Library hosted their first events on March 21st, 2009. At five different library branches in the city, readers where able to take out stereotypes and other representatives of groups in the community. The series of events represents the largest launch by a single organizer in the history of the Human Library.

Working with human rights is nothing new for the Calgary Public Library, but working with the Human Library is about "creating a culture of understanding among the patrons of the institutions", says Manager of Calgary Central Library and project coordinator, Gerry Burger-Martindale.

In 2010 the Calgary Public Library won the Minister’s Award for Innovation in Public Library Service for their Human Library program, which now has a program manager.
